How To Read More Books

How To Read More Books

It's the new year and many of us are setting new resolutions. One of the biggest resolutions is reading more. Specifically reading more books. Many people ask me how I read so many books in one year. It's really quite simple!

Here are my 7 tips on reading more books!:

1. Read Shorter Books

The trick is to read shorter books. Aim for books that are less than 300-400 pages. Shorter books often get to the point of the story quicker, so you will stay engaged more when reading.

2. Don't Stick to a Number

One of the best tips I can give you is, don't pick a number of books that you will read in a year. Instead just focus on reading every day. That is what really matters, over how many books you actually consumed in a year. At the end of the year, you will look back and say, "I actually sat down and read every day!"

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.
— Dr. Seuss

3. Read Just 20 Min. A Day

Yep, you only need to dedicate 20 minutes a day. Just aim for reading something during the day. It doesn't really have to be a book either. It can be a magazine, eBook, newspaper, etc. Reading enriches your mind. As Dr. Seuss says, it increases intelligence and provides mental stimulation. It is important to continue exercising our brain so that we stay sharp as we grow older.

4. Read What You Like

I often encourage people to go out of their comfort zone and read different genres. However, when you have a goal to read more books, you need to focus on what you like first. By reading what you like, you will be more apt to stay on the course. When you are comfortable reading more, you can start exploring other genres.

The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.
— Stephen Covey

5. Prioritize Your Time

This is my #1 tip!! Put down that phone, stop watching TV, stop playing those video games. Sit down Yep, it's really that simple. Like anything else, exercise, eating right, etc. you have to prioritize the things you want to do more in life. For example, for that hour you just spent on Facebook scrolling through your feed (I have been there, trust me) you could have read 50+ pages!

6. Bring Your Book Everywhere

And that brings me to another tip, is to bring your book everywhere. Read your book at the Doctor's waiting room, while riding the bus, at lunch hour, etc. 10 pages here and there throughout the day really do add up. And this will help you finish books faster!

7. It's Ok to Quit!

I don't mean reading, I mean that book that you just can't get into. If you start reading a book and it's just not your forte, it's ok to quit the book. Quitting early will give you more time to read the books you actually like!

Yay! You just read for the day too! I hope that helped you figure out how to read more books in a year. Do you have any tips on how to read more? Share them in the comments!
