The synopsis on the back of the book:
Many consider Evangeline Hamilton cursed. Orphaned at a young age and possessing a pair of mismatched eyes--one bright blue, the other dark brown--Eva has fought to find her way in a world that constantly rejects her. Yet the support of even one person can help overcome the world's judgments, and Eva has two--Seth and Zach, two former orphans she now counts as brothers.
Seeking justice against the man who stole his birthright and destroyed his family, Logan Fowler arrives in 1880s Pecan Gap, Texas, to confront Zach Hamilton, the hardened criminal responsible for his father's death. Only instead of finding a solitary ruthless gambler, he discovers a man not much older than himself with an unusual family. When Zach's sister, Evangeline, insists on dousing Logan with sunshine every time their paths cross, Logan finds his quest completely derailed. Who is truly responsible for his lost legacy, and will restoring the past satisfy if it means forfeiting a future with Evangeline?

Why I Chose This Book:
When I was sent the monthly email from Bethany House Publishing Blogger Program I knew immediately which one to pick. I remember reading the synopsis beforehand and it just sounded so sweet!
First Initial Thoughts:
Evangeline is a young woman who has been orphaned since age 4. She has no other family except for Zach and Seth who are also orphans. She has a condition which is now called Heterochromia - two different eye colors. This is very rare. Growing up she often got taunted by others because she didn't look the same as others. And even as an adult, she would get stares and accusations that she was a witch from townsfolk. I felt so bad for her because no one understood genetics or DNA at this time so they always assumed something supernatural was occurring. Despite all this, however, Evangeline is a strong, faithful, and kind person.
Zach and Seth, the other two main characters in this story are two boys who took in Evangeline when she was orphaned. I very much admired them for that decision. To take on a 4-year-old little girl took a lot of heart and responsibility. Zach was the head of the household and was very protective over Evangeline.
Seth is a man who has asthma. During this time period, no one knew really what caused asthma, so those that did have asthma, often died prematurely. However, Zach and Evangeline were persistent in finding out the cause. We all know Asthma attacks are caused by overexertion and can also be caused by dust and pollen. I also learned that coffee can lessen the symptoms of Asthma naturally. Caffeine is similar to the drug, theophylline. Interesting!
Logan is a man who is out for revenge. Zach cheated his father at a card game winning his land and all his money. Causing his father to take his own life. He blamed Zach for the misfortunes in his life - and the depression that is slowly taking his mother's life. Then he meets Evangeline and everything changes.
Karen makes Pecan Gap, Texas sound so lovely! The river, trees, forest, the old western town. Just sound so homey and peaceful. Karen really transported you back to a time when life was simpler, working a hard day in the fields and praising God was something to be proud of.
All the food mentioned in this book made me sooo hungry for homemade country food. Especially the warm biscuits with honey!
What I loved about this story was that there was always something happening to further add to the story. The story wasn't just about the issue between Logan and Zach. I won't say much more as to not spoil the story!
This last Sunday's sermon at my church reminded me of the meaning behind this story. The main question was - Why is that when we have all we ever wanted, money, fame, big houses, etc. that we still feel empty and sad? Logan thought for all intense and purposes that if he got revenge on his father that all would be ok. His mother would no longer be depressed and he could move on with his life. However, in all actuality, he would lose everything. Jesus can take away our pain, can make us whole again, and teach us to forgive the people that have done us wrong.
With Evangeline, I think Logan would have never thought of forgiving Zach and moving on with his life. I think she was his saving grace.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I didn't think the romance between Evangeline and Logan was too cliche and found it to be quite sweet and adorable.
